My 1st 500pts Skaven project finally gets underway.

Time for another post and to get this project up and running, this week I've been spending a little bit of time finishing my first 500 points of Skaven. And below you will see the progress that I have been making so far, ultimately it has been a long time coming as I have only played the game a handful of times in the new edition something I'm willing to change as hopefully over the next week or so I will get a couple more games in. 

I actually got the bases sometime ago from fantascape and if you check my blog I actually did a good review about them, please take the time and checking it out.

My first unit of rat ogres is now complete, and as always it'll take me a little bit of time to finally decide on what technique that I will use, when I go to paint the rest of my army as quick as possible, so onward and upward.

What Arrived In The Post Today, Wyrdstone Mines Bases Product Review

So, probably the best bit of any new army project is searching the internet for much-needed inspiration to see what little bits and pieces you can pick up, that in turn makes it stand out on the tabletop, and it wasn't long before I came across these resin bases on eBay. 

Fantascape™ is a new and expanding range of scenic bases for wargaming. Cast from high quality poly resin, the bases come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are designed to compliment some of the most popular gaming systems available. There are currently 3 ranges of Fantascape™ Scenic Bases. These will be expanded upon over the coming months, with new ranges being added regularly, along with the introduction of some beautiful pieces of scenery.

                                                 

Wyrdstone™ Mines

Anyone venturing into these ancient and long-forgotten Dwarf catacombs will discover that the once-sturdy flagstones are now smashed and decaying.

These broken floors are now littered with fallen props and planks, and scattered here and there you will find fragments of mysterious Wyrdstone™.

If you're lucky you may even spot a large Wyrdstone™ outcrop or two, but if you're scavenging for the strange glowing crystals beware..... don't be tempted to lift one of those old trap-doors, as the scurrying and skittering of innumerable sharpened claws has been heard to echo up from the depths..... 

As you can see from above I spent about £30 pounds which in turn gives me a good start point with everything I need to get started.

This is the first time that I have ever purchased such items and was a bit nervous considering the price as it's not the cheapest option, but considering the Skaven models can be purchased online very cheaply it all balances out.

I also really like the way the tiles on the floor make it look like they are collapsing inward as if something very heavy has walked across them.

So what's the conclusion I must admit I'm very impressed overall the quality speaks for itself, and they really do look good when put together. There is a few disadvantages using resin bases namely having to clip all your models feet, although it takes a little bit longer I feel the look is definitely justified with a small investment of time. 

The good

Look absolutely amazing when finished and painted

You can pretty much guarantee your the only one to have them.

The bad

Can be quite expensive although postage is free

A little bit more time spent attaching and clipping your models onto their bases. 

Final thoughts

Although not for everyone I would highly recommend them and am really looking forward to get the project up and running

Skaven Hobby Update What Arrived In The Post Today

Just a wee quick update to show everyone what arrived in the post today which I recently got on eBay, for the grand price of £7 which is a bargain considering, these models are too good. 

It's something that I like to try and do with all my projects, is to try and incorporate old and new models which if done right can work very well and make it stand out.

Having said that I still haven't decided what they are actually going to count as I think I'm going to convert the old Queek Headtaker as a battle standardbearer, which I feel is quite a fitting purpose. 

So hopefully my post man over the next few weeks, will be delivering more little parcels. Also please feel free to leave a comment below if you have your own suggestions or ideas as it's always good to get feedback.

So I just need to get these little fellow stripped.

New Skaven Project And There Is Strength In Numbers.

As you will all probably be aware I have just recently sold my Warhammer Night Goblin Army, so I have some funds in the hobby Kitty, to spent on my next project. It took quite a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to be, but I definitely knew it was going to be warhammer. Over the last few years 40K has been well catered for in my hobby, and I thought it was time for a change.

So the only question was exactly what army would I like to collect,and it wasn't an easy one to answer straight away, with a lot of looking around the Internet for much-needed help it was decided it would be Skaven with a few obvious reasons. 

For me it came down to price, I do not have a lot of disposable income to spend on a brand-new army, off-the-shelf and with the release of island of blood box set recently, they are available online on eBay, for next to nothing which is always a good start in my book.

 The models have been completely revamped and their book has only recently been released which makes them very effective on the tabletop and somewhat competitive which for me although not necessarily the number one reason it certainly helps, after all I did play night goblin's so it would be nice to maybe when the game below is some pictures of some inspiration that I came across to use and like the look of.

Also modelling and converting opportunities are a big draw to these little fellows as I have recently came across some very impressive work which I hope to post.

just goes to show what can be achieved with a little bit of imagination when it comes to conversions something that I want incorporate into the project.

So recently I have already started with buying the book on eBay for nearly half price which is a good start also I have picked up a few classic OOP models so the project is well underway, which in turn gives the army a very unique look mixing old and new.

This lineup takes advantage of your most potent weapon: your Gutter Runners. You could also drop the Thrower for an additional RR, though that would leave you with only 11 rats. Don't be afraid to use a Gutter Runner as a passer. His mobility should keep his passes relatively short, and if you've got a RR available, Gutter Runners are better passers than your Throwers are, at least until your Throwers start collecting Passing skills. Once you have some cash, add your 2nd thrower, then a reroll, then your Rat Ogre, then fill out your roster with linemen.

You hear a lot of people complaining that there isn't any BB models being released which couldn't be further from the truth, considering with the new release of warhammer eighth edition and with dozens of warhammer box sets available for most of the races. It doesn't take much effort to transform a unit into BB team with relatively little effort. And I'm already looking to my next project, but to this one briefly if I can.

So as always where does the project began for me it begins looking through the Internet for inspiration, and surprisingly, there wasn't much to go on so I find myself looking at the computer games artwork which have some very cool pictures, and I'm already coming up with ideas for the players individually

So you've probably seen the big picture and that has given it away, and just to clarify its then low-down dirty rats for me this time around and the unit of choice is (with a drum roll please) The skaven night runners box set.

So what is exactly underneath in the box

Overall it wasn't an easy decision I have recently playing them online, and I've decided to convert my very own team from the warhammer box set, at £18 it's not exactly the cheapest, but it's a lot cheaper than the ones that GW is currently selling and the models themselves are looking a we bit dated.

surprisingly quite a lot this is a kit from 20 models (more than enough to make my team) all different shapes and sizes and the reason why, I like these is because their multi-poseable i.e. you can adjust the arms and legs, etc to whatever positions you want, you also can decide what they look like. And for BB this is vital to make your team look like a team and not just a plastic model that's had his weapons removed.

The Thrower is were I wanted to do something different and try and include some sort of mechanical enhancement for throwing the ball.

4 Gutter Runners probably the most satisfying bit of the team at present and I'm really pleased the way they have turned out

So considering I've only started things are coming along quite nicely.
